Figurine des etains du Prince-de la collection Empire
Marshals, Generals, officers and soldiers are brought together in a collection rich of almost 300 pewter figurines. The average size of the figurines is 12,5cm.
Bonaparte, practical man and an artillerist himself, was the first General to worry about the hitches and additional tirednesses caused by the handling of his artillery.
In year VIII of the French Revolution, it created the battalions of the Artillery Train, carter soldiers, who, although dedicated to a passive role during the battles, showed of a quiet courage and admirable contempt of the danger. They are these soldiers, whom Etains du Prince chose to represent, riding the two horses carrying our attachment.
In theory, the front-axle unit was tracted by four horses, but one could add two other of them, in muddy ground or to increase the speed of the unit. This is why on this attachment harnessed in "german" way, all was done to lighten the convoy: fine tiller, leading rein, swallow-hole and leather surdos of Hungary.
The off-horse (noncarrying horse on right-hand side), was discharged as far as possible. One sought to limit the weight of the accessories of harness and traction, because the guns could weigh until nearly a ton.
The way in which this part was treated, reproduces well all the elements of this attachment, which by the number of its details and its relatively important dimension, constitutes a group of great beauty by Etains du Prince.
The figurine
From a technical point of view, the realization of a new subject requires much research in order to gather an important documentation. Once done, the sculptor works out a subject in modelling clay which requires for this scale an infinite delicacy and a rigorous detail.
After many operations one finally obtains the rubber mould which will receive pewter in fusion. Manual sandpapering, sanding, chiselling will give to the figurine thus born, its unequalled patina which gives this so particular charm to creations of Etains du Prince.
