Canon des etains du prince de la collection "Empire". Former second lieutenant in the artillery, Napoleon gave a dominating role to Artillery. Gathered massively in a strategic point, the guns broke enemy defenses under a flood of projectiles before advancing the infantry.
Les Etains du Prince chose to present the famous Gribeauval gun of 8. The 8 indicates the weight (8 pounds) of the ball. Its range varied according to the firing angle from 250 to 2000 meters. Balls could be full (out of cast iron), but one also shot boxes with grapeshots or "biscaïens", kind of metal cylinders filled with lead bullets. The rate/rhythm of shooting was 1 to 2 blows per minute. The ball was introduced by the mouth of the gun, cleaned beforehand by means of a flue brush. One servant then inserted an iron fuller in the light of the cylinder head. Then a flammable firing tubewas introduced into the load. It was fired by means of a fire lance, lit with a fuse of tinder.
On the display, you can see two servants handling the rammer in front of the gun, while the pointer chief takes care of aiming. Two others servants operate the mounting with their pointing levers. Another artillerist approaches the blaster, while a seventh man takes the bucket intended for the cleaning of the tube. The eighth soldier carries a ball for the next load.
The figurine
From a technical point of view, the realization of a new subject requires much research in order to gather an important documentation. Once done, the sculptor works out a subject in modelling clay which requires for this scale an infinite delicacy and a rigorous detail.
After many operations one finally obtains the rubber mould which will receive pewter in fusion. Manual sandpapering, sanding, chiselling will give to the figurine thus born, its unequalled patina which gives this so particular charm to creations of Etains du Prince.
