According to Thailand's legendary epic story, Ramakien, Phra Ram is the king of Ayutthaya. He is the reincarnation of Vishnu, known as Phra Narai in Thailand. On the request of his stepmother, Kaiyaket, who wants her own son to be king, King Tosarot banishes his son, Phra Ram into the forest for 14 years. The evil king Tosakanth kidnapped Phra Ram's wife Sida, and thus the Ramakien tells of Phra Ram's adventures and misadventures on his quest to rescue her. Jaitip molds Phra Ram's handsome face from resin and paints his striking features by hand. His rich robe is accessorized with Czech crystals while his hands are carved from rubber wood. Bamboo sticks guide the puppet's movements.

Inspired by the Ramayana, Thailand's King Rama I wrote the Ramakien in 1797. Though there are similarities between the two epic stories, the Ramakien takes place in Thailand and is composed of five books, whereas the Ramayana contains seven. The characters may bear certain similarities, but there are also distinct themes that render each story unique.
