Mercator (1511 - 1594, mathematician and geographer at the court of Charles Quint) rationalized and revolutionized cartography by carrying out the first projection of the terrestrial sphere on a plane chart and conversely. Its projection deforms more and more the chart towards the poles, because it is based on the projection of the surface of the terrestrial sphere on a cylinder tangent to the sphere at the equator. The meridian lines and the parallels always remain perpendicular. Mercator was naturally sued by the Church of that time for heresy, a clear distinction for his independence of mind and creativity.
