Immortalized in an ascension tablet, Kan Xul receives the crown of Palenque from his ancestor Pacal, considered the first great ruler of the city. He wears a pectoral that depicts the sun god, and a woman in a jade collar and skirt presents him with the symbol of lineage. Angel Cerón recreates a stela from Palenque. Located at the western limits of the Maya territory where the sun sets, Palenque is thought to have been a necropolis. Its harmonious architecture blends into the earth, making this one of the loveliest of all Maya ceremonial centers.
