This Jade (Jadeite) mosaic mask is a replica of the original that was discovered in Palenque by the Mexican archaeologist Albert Ruz. The mask was found in the tomb of king Pacal in the Temple of the Inscriptions. It represents the sun god who had given so much wisdom and power to Pacal. This god was of great importance in the Maya culture and had to be satisfied in order for the sun to continue coming up day after day.
