Technique of moulding with Plaster
Plaster is the material of predilection of the moulding.
It makes it possible to obtain the most faithful details. Its reasonable cost makes it available to all. It was already used during the Neolithic era in the Near East.
Egyptians, Greeks, Romains used it, in particular to mould faces and parts of the body. In France, the first examples of use of the material consist of the sarcophagi built at the Merovingian times (middle ages), entirely out of plaster, in moulds whose panels are carved. The plaster knew a new favour during the Renaissance, in particular with the sculptor Verrocchio (1435-1488), and has been currently used until our days.
Plaster is obtained from gypsum crushed then cooked around 150 degrees and then refined. The plaster powder is added gradually to water. One "wastes it" before the beginning of his "catch", i.e. it is mixed it in order to ensure its homogeneity while taking care to release the bubbles of air.
Malleable, it is spread in a mould of which it will take the form perfectly. Realized with "bolsters", mixture of plaster and vegetable fibres, the moulding is resistant to the shocks. The plaster is also a material which is restored easily and which by its capillarity allows very good hangs pigments and can offer an infinity of nuances thus. It goes without saying that it is disadvised to expose it outside or to a strong moisture.
