Son of a cabinetmaker craftsman, François Pompon between at the School of the Art schools of Dijon after having worked the stone and wood with Saulieu to earn its living. He studies architecture and sculpture and acquires some rudiments of engraving. In 1874, Pompon leaves for Paris and enters in relation with the contractors who transform Paris under the Second Empire. He carries out decorative figures and caryatids for the frontage of the Town hall then enters the Rodin workshop where he will remain fifteen years.

He will have to await the age of 67 years and the Salon of 1922 to reach success with "L'ours blanc (the polar bear)". Known especially as animalist sculptor, he will exalt the lyricism of the light in the polish of surfaces and the economy of details. After being preserved at the Botanical garden, the three hundred parts bequeathed by F Pompon were transferred definitively in Dijon, to the Musée des Beaux-Arts (Fine Arts Museum).

Technique of moulding in Resin

The use of resins for mouldings is recent. The resin allows the realization of fragile works and/or of small size which can be reproduced in a material cheaper than bronze. This material is also very well adapted to an outside display.

The resins are generally presented in a liquid form that harden after addition of a catalyst. Their properties of resistance can be reinforced by the use of "loads" as metal powder or the use of glass fibre, which makes it possible, by a technique of laminates, to create large and hollow but very resistant mouldings. The addition of metal powders or marble powder, and possible colouring by pigments allow resin very faithful reproductions on which the finishers will be able to express their know-how and to give to your statue, the aspect of that which is displayed at the museum.
