HMS Victory. A 56 m long ship, armed with more than 100 guns, built by the English between 1759 and 1765, and brought into service in 1778. It is probably useless to recall here that this ship, flagship of Admiral Nelson (known as Lord Nelson in the UK), was present at the time of the battle of Trafalgar in 1805, which changed the course of history, by making it impossible for Napoleon to conquer England, an event a priori inevitable. Thanks to a brilliant strategy, the English, in numerical inferiority, rolled the French forces and destroyed almost all the vessels which they did not capture. Admiral Nelson, who would undoubtedly better have remained at home this day, was killed towards the end of the battle by a French sniper.
The English people set up a commemorative column to Nelson of which the height (44 m), higher than that of most Roman emperors, testifies to the fear that they had and of the service that he rendered to England, and the HMS Victory is cherished since this date and has become a very famous floating museum. It seems that Victory is the last ship in the world built during the 18th century still in a position to sail to date. It is one of the most famous vessels of history and one of most significant. After 200 years, we may consider it a global European inheritage.
Note: for pleasure, an interesting comparison of length between the
article about the Victory in the Wikipedia encyclopedia in French version, and of the article on the same subject in the English version... The model
This model is produced by hand by Vietnamese craftsmen starting from hard exotic wood. The hull is built in broadsides on couples (boards fixed on the reinforcement). The level of detail is excellent, and finishing is superb. This model of boat is not in kit, but is directly ready to be admired.
