Drakkar is a word invented in the XIXth century by romantic French writers, to designate the ships of the Vikings, and seemingly created starting from the word dragon, which often decorated the figurehead of these vessels (for information, the correct name is "esnèque" in French, and I don't know its translation in English). However, the first real drakkar was found in 1881 in Sweden under a tumulus, and its form is thus well-known since then. These ships, excellent at sea, were used by the Vikings between the years 700 and approximately 1000 and allowed them to travel around all the coasts of Europe, and possibly, to the New world. They were built in oak, with dimensions approximately 24 m length and 5 m broad. Their form was very slim. Ten oars on each side allowed the final operations when the square sail could not be used.
The model
This model is produced by hand by Vietnamese craftsmen starting from hard exotic wood. The hull is built in broadsides on couples (boards fixed on the reinforcement). The level of detail is excellent, and finishing is superb. This model of boat is not in kit, but is directly ready to be admired.
