The Santa Maria was the flagship de Christophe Colomb, on which he left Europa to serach for the Western road towards the Indies, and discovered the Caribbean in 1492. In fact, no one really knows the original plans of the Santa Maria, and appreciably different versions are proposed. In any case, what is certain is it was a sailing ship of the Nao type, with the round and thus rather unstable hull with a triangular sail to facilitate navigation.
The model
This model of boat is of museum quality. It is manufactured by hand by Malagasy craftsmen under the direction of Herve Scrive. For an optimal fidelity to the model, the construction of the ship model uses the process of assembly of broadsides on couples (the boards forming the hull are fixed on the couples forming the internal frame of the ship). The bridge of the boat is lathed as on a full scale boat. The hull and the bridge are varnished in several layers. The vessel is made out of exotic wood chosen for their qualities in model making and for their colors.
Each ship model is numbered and accompanied by a historical summary engraved on wood.
This model of boat, assembled by hand during tens or of hundreds of hours of craftmen specialized in hulls manufacturing, rigging, installation of veils etc, is not a kit, but is fully assembled and ready to be admired.
