Designed by Clinton Hadley Crane, Dixie II was built by Frank Wood of City Island NY for E.J. Schroeder in 1907.

Dixie II is a variation of the original Dixie with a flatter aft and a rounded transom. Built with rock elm framing, the hull was planked with 3/8” mahogany below the water line and ¼” mahogany above the water line.

She weighed 1,130 pounds and extended 39’3” long with a beam of 5’4”. The Crane-Whitman engine and its placement in the hull assured Dixie II’s great success.

The Crane-Whitman was a radical V-8 engine, which generated one horsepower for every 10 pounds of weight and obtained 220 hp at 900 rpm.
Dixie II dominated racing for 2 years winning 107 out of 108 races including the Harmsworth in 1908 and the Gold Cups in 1908 and 1909.
Because her hull was built too lightly, she leaked a bit. Thus, a new hull was fabricated in 1909 and the engine was tweaked to generate 250 hp with the addition of a second carburetor. The “new” boat was shipped to Monaco, where Wolseley Siddeley II soundly defeated her with a vessel ten feet longer, having three times the power and, most importantly, was more suited for ocean racing.
