Riviera 1950 by Azimute Category : ship, sailboat, runabout models
To build a model, it is necessary to outline 3 drawings: body plan, water lines, and the diagonals.
It is also necessary to have drawings of the sails if it is a sailing boat, drawings of the deck and finally a good representation of deck fittings and accessories. Once the building plans are reduced or enlarged to a desired scale the first step is to redraw on carbon paper the diagram of construction to obtain gauges of each part, required to build the model
These gauges have to be transferred on to small wooden planks. Outlines have to be drawn on the wood then the wood is cut and the pieces assembled.
Once the hull structure has been established the delicate operation of installing the planks starts by placing the slats one by one from keel to deck.
The deck planks then take place by gluing the slats one by one. Then the entire hull is covered by glue. All the models have to be sanded several times until a perfect surface has been achieved on the deck and hull. After inspection and no defects could by found 10 layers of varnish are applied with a sand papered finish between each layer in order to obtain the smoothest possible surface. Then it is time to draw the waterline and to start painting the hull at the desired places.
Thereafter the Runabout receives 5 layers of shiny varnish, the desk fitting is molded in wax like true jewels then placed on the deck and hull. The ultimate step is the installation of the seats, entirely made by hand.
Each model of a Runabout is finally placed in a carton box padded with cushions adjusted to fit each different model. The carton box is entirely covered by 4 moulds of polystyrene and placed in a second box to ensure a secure transportation to the final destination. This model is delivered assembled and ready to display.
