The spiritual traditions of Brazil inspire Marcilio Barroco to design an original mask in honor of Exu, a powerful Orixá.. The term 'Orixá' refers to any deity from the Yoruba religion, which was brought to Brazil by West African slaves during the colonial period. They personify the forces of nature and hold integral roles in Afro-Brazilian rituals. Exu is the Orixá of communication, the guardian of homes, villages, and cities, as well as of human behavior. Exu should be greeted as the 'good speaker and communicator' during a ceremony, and be the first to receive any offerings to ensure everything will be alright, and to guarantee the communication between Orun (spiritual world) and Aiye (material world). Barroco honors this legendary Orixá with a finely tooled leather mask featuring a red headdress, for red symbolizes the presence of Exu.
The mask is fitted with elastic, so that it may be worn or used as a decorative item.
